Tustin Sathya Sai Book Center

“How do you know who is a devotee and who is not?”

In the early 2000s, workers at the Tustin Sathya Sai Book Center claimed a "boss"—matching the description of Sathya Sai Baba—personally inspected their work. When Dr. Narendranath Reddy remarked that Swami gave darshan to "non-devotees" instead of the faithful, Swami offered a divine correction.

"Forget for-getting God"

When a brilliant lawyer asked for liberation, Swami tested him with hundreds of questions about his life, family, and past. After the lawyer answered every single one perfectly, Swami remarked, "If you remember so much, how will you get liberation?" This story teaches us that God is simple, but our minds are cluttered; to find true peace, we must empty our heads of unnecessary baggage and learn to live freely in the present moment.

Duty as Devotion

Seeking deeper spirituality, a school headmaster once considered leaving his post to perform penance in the Himalayas. Swami gently corrected him, explaining that the divine task already entrusted to him was the very path to the spiritual success he sought. He realized that God is not found in distant mountains, but in the faithful fulfillment of the duties He has given us.

Priority of the Soul

When a businessman complained that his problems remained despite seeking help, Swami pointed out that while the man never missed a meal for his body, he neglected the spiritual practice prescribed for his soul. Swami emphasized that "food for the spirit" is far more important than food for the body, as only the Atma can provide true, lasting peace. To receive Divine Grace, we must make His instructions our highest priority rather than letting worldly routines consume our time.

The Essence of True Seva

Swami often shared the story of a canteen manager who diluted food with water to save effort, neglecting the devotees' welfare. Years later, Swami reminded him that his physical suffering was a reflection of that poor service. This story teaches us that Seva is a sacred responsibility; when we perform our duties without heart or integrity, we create obstacles for our own spiritual journey.

A Golden Moment with Swami

During the gilding of Sai Kulwant Hall, Swami shared a mischievous laugh with workers who were literally sparkling with gold flakes. It serves as a beautiful reminder that while we may seek gold on the surface, Swami sees the "Bangaru" within each of us.

Are you ready for Grace?

When a devotee publicly pleads for Grace, Swami offers a startling definition that defies common expectations. He reveals that true Grace isn't just about comfort and blessings, but a profound spiritual strength that remains unshaken even when facing life's greatest calamities. It is a stirring lesson on the difference between seeking convenience and seeking the Divine.

Beyond Gold and Diamonds

When an interview panel asks a student what material jewelry he received from his Guru, his response leaves them speechless. This story beautifully illustrates that the most valuable gift one can receive isn't a physical object, but the unshakable self-confidence needed to face the world.

The Invisible Invitation

In this deep dialogue, Swami reveals that no one arrives in Puttaparthi by accident; every visitor is personally called. He explains that his true mission is not to perform miracles, but to claim the hearts and souls of those ready to experience a love that transcends the material world.

The 10th Path of Devotion: Reading as Sadhana

Last time when I went to parti yatra, I met this towering inspiration. He is Malla Reddy from Habsipur in Siddipet district, Telangana state. He is 73 years old and is a farmer by profession. He knows no hymns, and no bhajans. But he undertakes an unique sadhana every day. His village has 290 households. With his meagre earnings, he subscribed Sanathana Sarathi for 171 households. After his work in the fields, everyday he spends his evening visiting 9 households on a roaster basis (you can see the list of households in the picture). He gathers all the family members and reads aloud Sanathana Sarathi. He says that is his sadhana. He was illiterate 15 years ago. When he visited Parti as a part of one Parti yatra, he was so inspired with what he saw. Next few years he educated himself and is now using that literacy in this unique way. Looking at him, I felt probably 9 paths of devotion can be made into 10 adding “patanam (reading)” to the list. Lord is unique and so are his devotees.

The Gates of Heaven

Once, three people arrived at the gates of heaven.

The first one declared, “I am a master of all the holy scriptures, so the gates should open for me.”

The gatekeepers replied: “You only know the texts. You have no practical experience. Go away.”

The second one said: “I have performed many rituals and sacrificial rites.”

The gatekeepers replied: “You performed those sacrifices for selfish goals. There is no place for you here.”

The third person, a farmer, approached the gates and said: “I am a poor farmer; I have a hut on two acres of land. I offered food and drink to travelers and gave them shelter when it was necessary. I shared everything I had with them. That is my entire sadhana.” The gatekeepers said: “You may enter.”

This story illustrates the truth that only those who are ready to sacrifice what they have to help others in need have the right to enter heaven.

Walking with the Divine: Learning to Trust

I asked Swami how I could learn to make the right decisions.
He told me to pray to Him and assured me that within one-half hour I would receive an answer. This is a promise that He kept. As time passed and I assimilated, integrated and put into practice more of His teachings, I found I developed greater confidence and my prayers for guidance became less frequent. Just as a parent teaching a toddler to walk, Swami was slowly releasing His hand, enabling me to walk without direct assistance.

The Unseen Petitioners

Once Swami called me for an interview along with some others at Puttaparthi. We all went and sat in the interview room. Swami came and said, 'any questions?' There were a few minutes silence. Then, suddenly, we began to hear the squeaks of several types of birds in the room. We were all surprised and began to look in all directions but could not find any bird in the room. Swami smilingly said: 'Not only you, but several other beings like birds will always be making requests and representations to Swami. You have now just heard a few of them.'
